Premium PC/Console Deep Dive: Growth, Engagement, and Ad Spend
Premium PC and console gaming grew again in H1 2026 as action pulled premium Steam hours ahead of shooters, US social ad budgets remained concentrated on Meta and YouTube, and GTA VI showed how a single media moment can move pre-orders. Sensor Tower’s Gaming Deep Dive: Premium PC/Console report is a front row seat for everything Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox.

Premium PC and console gaming is often described as flat. The H1 2026 numbers tell a quieter story: paid units are up, engagement is shifting by genre, and the biggest marketing dollars still cluster in a few places. For publishers and marketers planning against GTA VI and a crowded fall slate, the useful question is not whether the category moved, but where the growth, playtime, and ad attention actually went. Sensor Tower's latest Gaming Deep Dive report dives into the latest premium PC and console trends.
Key Takeaways:
H1 2026 premium PC/Console revenue reached about $13.8B across PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox, up 5% from H1 2025.
Premium Steam hours rose about 13% in H1 2026 vs H1 2025. Action led and grew fastest (+28%), ahead of Strategy (+24%), while shooters grew more slowly (+14%).
Meta and YouTube account for 76% of US social ad spend from PC/Console publishers. Add TikTok and the top four clear 91%.
The day of Netflix’s GTA VI: An Extended Look's release, estimated worldwide console pre-order revenue jumped 6x.
Premium revenue grew 5% in H1 2026
H1 2026 premium revenue reached about $13.8B across PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox, up from about $13.1B in H1 2025 (+5%). The half was steady quarter to quarter, with Q1 at $6.9B and Q2 at $6.9B. Seasonality is still clear: Q4 2025 was the peak at $8.8B, then volumes softened into H1.
Action leads premium Steam hours
Premium Steam hours rose about 13% in H1 2026 versus H1 2025, but the mix shifted. Action still leads and grew fastest at about +28%, with Strategy close behind at about +24%. Shooters grew more slowly at about +14% and remain a smaller slice of premium play, even though the genre leads free-to-play Steam time spent. RPG hours fell about 14%, Simulation was only modestly higher, and Sports & Racing got a clearer lift in Q2 2026. For teams planning UA and live ops against premium catalogs, Action is the engagement center of gravity right now.
Meta and YouTube take most US social spend
US social ad spend from PC/Console publishers remains highly concentrated. Meta alone takes more than half, with Instagram and Facebook nearly even. YouTube is next at just under a quarter, so Meta plus YouTube account for about 76%. Add TikTok and the top four clear 91%. Reddit is the clearest PC/Console skew at nearly 5%, several times its mobile social share. That mix sits above the usual “YouTube is the home of PC/Console” framing, which still fits total digital better than social alone. Within tagged social dollars, Meta is the heavier wallet.
GTA VI pre-orders 6x the day after Netflix’s Extended Look
GTA VI pre-orders ran about $2.4M to $3.8M per day across PlayStation and Xbox through most of August. The day after Netflix's An Extended Look, that jumped to $16.3M, roughly 6x. PlayStation took the bulk of it at $12.9M against Xbox's $3.4M. Two weeks later, daily pre-orders were still near $5.9M, close to double the August pace, so the special reset the baseline rather than just creating a one-day spike.
